The small parts rule, in plain words

Federal law bans children's products intended for children under 3 that present a choking, aspiration or ingestion hazard because of small parts. The ban is at 16 CFR part 1501, and a small part is anything that fits entirely into a test cylinder sized like the throat of a child under three4.

Products for older children that are or contain small parts, balloons, small balls or marbles must carry a choking hazard warning telling buyers not to give them to children under a certain age (16 CFR 1500.19), and advertising for those toys must use the same warning4.

What that means at home: a crate made for a 6 year old can lawfully contain parts a baby could choke on. If a younger sibling is around, open and store older children's kits out of reach.

Matching a box to a child

  1. Step 1

Use the stated range, not the top of it

A child at the bottom of a range may need more help; at the top, less.

  2. Step 2

    Look a year ahead

On an annual plan, check the range covers your child's age for the whole year.

  3. Step 3

    Check every box's warning label

Labels follow the contents, which change month to month.

About this page

We do not earn anything from purchases today. Every product link is a plain link to the merchant's own page, without an affiliate code. We may join merchants' affiliate programs in the future, and this notice will say so before that changes.

Prices, plans, shipping and cancellation terms belong to each merchant and can change. The merchant's own page is the final word on price, availability and terms.

LittleCrate Pick compares published facts. We have not tested these boxes with children and make no claims about what they teach. Check each box's age guidance and warning labels.
