Auto-renewal and cancelling a subscription box

Kids' boxes renew until you stop them. Here is what federal law requires of the seller, and what to check yourself. Not legal advice.

What federal law requires

The Restore Online Shoppers' Confidence Act (15 U.S.C. 8403) applies to subscriptions sold online with a negative option feature, meaning the seller keeps charging unless you act. The seller must clearly and conspicuously disclose all material terms before taking your billing information, get your express informed consent before charging you, and provide simple mechanisms to stop recurring charges1.

The FTC also adopted a broader Negative Option Rule, known as Click-to-Cancel. On July 8, 2025 the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit vacated it in its entirety, before it took effect2. ROSCA still applies, and so do state automatic renewal laws, which differ by state2.

A cancellation checklist

  1. Step 1

    Before you subscribe

Find the renewal date, the renewal price and how to cancel on the checkout page. ROSCA requires these material terms to be disclosed before billing1.

  2. Step 2

    Save the confirmation

Keep the order email that states the plan, price and renewal terms.

  3. Step 3

    Note the cut-off

Boxes are often prepared before they ship. Check the company's deadline for skipping or cancelling the next box.

  4. Step 4

Cancel the way the company offers

Use the account page or method the company names, and keep the cancellation confirmation.

  5. Step 5

    If charges continue

Contact the company first with your confirmation; then your card issuer. Your state attorney general's consumer office can explain your state's automatic renewal law.

About this page

We do not earn anything from purchases today. Every product link is a plain link to the merchant's own page, without an affiliate code. We may join merchants' affiliate programs in the future, and this notice will say so before that changes.

Prices, plans, shipping and cancellation terms belong to each merchant and can change. The merchant's own page is the final word on price, availability and terms.
